Randall Blackburn, born in Chester County, Penn., was raised on a dairy farm and as a child, developed interests and talents in natural history, music and art. In 1974 he was accepted into the Pennsylvania Governor’s School for the Arts. Upon entering the University of Delaware in 1976 he participated in a Dean’s Scholar Program studying Biological Sciences and Fine Art. Upon graduating in 1980 with a B.S. In Biological Sciences and Art, an internship as an Illustrator at the Museum of Natural History and Smithsonian Institution brought him to Washington DC. A single course in photography began an interest in photographic arts as a means of artistic expression. An apprenticeship in medical Illustration eventually led to the current ownership of Artifex Inc., a dental laboratory specializing in cosmetic dental restoration and implants. Within the past several years Randall has taken the skills and techniques required in dentistry and applied them to creating custom jewelry using only precious and semi precious stones in contemporary yet classic design.
